Game of the Week |
6/4/2014 Friday the 13th 3D-PC
Ok, let me begin by proclaiming that I am a HUGE Friday the 13th fan. Now I typically don’t openly discuss it on the internet, due to everyone stating “oh, no, I'M the biggest fan”. But trust me, where Friday the 13th is concerned, I can say with confidence, I know it all. That said, back to this incredibly awesome home-brew game! You start the game as Jason and you are given objectives, such as kill all the teenagers, which you must complete before you can move on. The game is small, glitchy, has a multiplayer mode that I cannot get to work, and the AI is ridiculously simple. However, there are throw-backs to many of the movies EVERYWHERE, you have the ability to switch view (including first-person) and you also have the capability to sever limbs/heads creating geysers of blood. Also, you can play the game as part 3, part 4, or part 6 Jason and can unlock skins for part 7 Jason, part 8 Jason, Jason Goes to Hell Jason, and Pamela Voorhees (Jason’s mother). Add this all in with a superb array of weapons, movie music, and Easter-eggs galore and this game presents it-self as fun for anyone. However, if you are a really big fan of Friday the 13th, this is the game to play. The NES game had its moments, but all who play this home-brew game will agree that this title deserves recognition from mainstream developers. Someday, maybe we will all see this game, Man Hunt style, on a Play Station or Nintendo console. Until then, I will provide you with a link to download this game: http://www.mediafire.com/download/4pg0hzqrhfeaxvz/Friday+the+13th.rar

12/1/2013-Monster Hunter 3/Ultimate
Well, MH3U, where to I begin? Well, I never got the chance to experience the first two Monster Hunter games and, as a result, often am labeled a noob. Well, that hasn’t stopped me. Actually, I suppose nothing could as I have logged over 450 hours of gameplay. This game is so awesome, complex, rewarding, and over the top. I did get a chance to play Monster Hunter Tri and never got too into it, but for some reason, MH3U grabbed my attention. The battles are exciting and challenging, strategy is a constant component of gameplay, from forging weapons and armor to preparing for battle. The environments are breathtaking and the social networking is seem-less, user-friendly, and just plain fun. And not to mention the DLC which allows for the possibility of an infinite number of downloadable quests. Probably the coolest feature of this game is the file transfer feature between the Wii-U and the 3DS. This allows the player to play with friends on the internet on the Wii-U and then transfer their file to their 3DS which allows local play as opposed to online play. Local play on the Wii-U allows the Wii-U console to connect to the 3DS so a Wii-U console can also be used to jump in on local play action. Additionally, the file transfer allows for portable single-player mode and the swapping of Hunter-Cards via StreetPass. With all this game’s inherent, built-in possibilities, you may find yourself spending hundreds of hours as well learning to uncover its sophisticated dynamics. MH3U, get it.
2/9/2013-Mario Paint
O.K., I know that some of you may be thinking "Mario Paint? Is that really even a game"? Alright, Mario Paint may not be a game in the strictest sense of the term; however, it does boast a set of mini-games that can be played when taking a break from painting such as an insect attack game. Obviously, this does not render this title appropriate for game of the week, but Mario Paint offers gamers so much more; the facilitation of creativity. It comes included with an extensive paint program, variable user-friendly animation program, a Mario themed music maker, a large collection of game character stamps such as Mario and Yoshi, and so much more all controled with the exclusive SNES Mouse. This game/program was so fantastic it enabled me to create full-length cartoon movies and home-brew commercials. I can honestly say I have spent countless hours fiddling with new methods of manipulating Mario Paint's and my VCR's capabilities. Although Mario Paint may not be generally viewed as a game, the impressive capabilities it endowed SNES owners back in the 90's was absolutely ground-breaking. Mario Paint has earned a place as game of the week and as a timeless classic.
2/3/2013-Final Fantasy XII
Square Enix has nailed it every time since they were Square Soft. From Final Fantasy to Secret of Mana and Evermore, Square continues to deliver a quality blend of story and game-play; Final Fantasy XII is no exception to the equation. The twelfth installment of the Final Fantasy series features real-time turn-based combat, explorable 3D environments, and hours upon hours of side-quests, secrets, and mythical monsters to conquest. Final Fantasy XII also features a guild concept that offers gamers hunting contracts to fulfill for money and items. Combine these elements with Final Fantasy's typical plot, music, and game-play elements and Final Fantasy XII is able shine as an independent perfection amongst its brethren on its own merits..
1/28/2013-Doom
Is anyone else a big fan of Id Software? It seems everything they produced eeked it's way into the daily aspect of my video-game childhood. Id released smash hit games such as Duke Nukem, Commander Keen, Hexen, Quake, etc. Although most remember Doom as one of the first 1st-person 3D shooters, it was preceeded by Wolfenstein 3D and Catacombs 3D; both of which also produced by Id Software with Catacombs being the first ever 1st-person 3D shooter ever! But enough about the awesome company that created these classic games; Doom offered gamers a frightening experience with emersive gameplay. Players had to battle hordes of demon spawn while conserving ammo and seeking health-replenishing medipacks. The final chapters of the game even send the player into the depths of Hell itself. From the eerie sountrack and effects to the monsterously terrifying enemies, Doom never seemed to let up. A rollercoaster ride until the end, which is well worth the challenge. Now that I have a copy of Doom 3/BFG Edition, I have Doom 1, 2, and 3 with add-on chapters included at my fingertips on one awesome disk. So pick up a copy of Doom; its easily available, economically priced, and worth hours upon hours of enjoyment.
1/22/2013-Dragon's Lair
One great thing about this game is its availability. It can be played via PS3, 3DS, PC, Android, and even from a simple Blue-Ray player. However, let's get back to its roots. Dragon's Lair was originally released only for the PC and arcade machines. It was the first game to feature cartoon like graphics that gave it the feel of controling a cartoon-like program. I remember staring in awe at the arcade machine while watching the demo as I had never seen anything of its caliber. It was a dollar for five plays, and anyone who's played Dragon's Lair knows that five lives don't go very far. Although its revolutionary graphics excited me, the game quickly lost its enticing nature as my arcade funds quickly diminished. Now, it is possible to enjoy this game in its entirety without a wad of singles appropriate for an outing to the strip club. I, for one, welcome back Dragon's Lair with open arms.
8/12/2012-Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Lets face it, this game has it all, great graphics, hours of gameplay, awesome game design, etc. etc. etc. Even the strategy guide accompanying this game rivals the size of the holy bible. One of my favorite components of this title is how pliable the reactions from charecter's within the game are. Each reacts to the main charecter in such a fashion that one is inclined to believe it is the result of artificial intelligence. And if beating the main storyline and 500+hourse of side-adventuring doesn't quite satisfy you, the downloadable add-on content should assist with tiding you over until Elder Scrolls VI. If you have yet to play this innovative game, do it; do it now. Drop your keyboard and speed to the nearest game store and plug it into whichever game system of your particular choice is. I guarantee that you will freakin' love this game. Happy dragon slaying!
1/29/2012-Kirby's Adventure-3DS
O.K., I admit it, this is the first Kirby game I have ever played and I have only recently played it on a 3DS. Why have I waited so long to play Kirby? I don’t know; but what I do know is that I have been missin’ out. Not only was this game great in terms of gameplay and classic fun, but its’predecessor, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land for the Wii, is equally as fantastic as this console Kirby template. The bosses were fun and require strategy, the numerous amount of abilities offered freedom and excitement, and with the features of the 3DS, I was able to pause gameplay for hours at any moment in time. It should be especially noted that this feature enabled flexibility in this game that made it fun to play for hours or minutes at a time. Combined with the updated 3D feature, these attributes make this game a must have for casual and hardcore gamers alike. If you have a 3DS, buy this game and play it, whether or not you have already have played it on the NES; it's so worth the couple of bucks it costs to download.
8/17/2011-Ninja Gaiden-NES
All who have played it will attest to the same thing: The original Ninja Gaiden was really hard! It is my belief that what drove this game forward into our hearts is its revolutionary cinematic sequences. That’s right; Ninja Gaiden for the NES was the first game to feature cinema scenes. The plot is engrossing as you search for the truth about your father’s death that seems shrouded in mystery. As the game progresses, answers are replaced with more questions. Who was that girl who shot me? What are these statues and what do they do? Is Ryu’s father truly dead? These are the questions that pushed me forward to the end of the game; and let me tell you, it’s really worth it! The game play is fast and reactive and the levels are ingeniously creative. When all of these attributes combine, a timeless videogame is created and eventually recognized. Way to go Tecmo!
8/8/2011-Super Mario Kart-SNES
Oh yeah, Super Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo is still an awesome game. I remember the long nights my buddy and I had while playing round after round of battle-mode. In fact, here’s a tip. A jump feather can be used to make really sharp turns. Use it to avoid red-shells by accelerating towards a wall and jump turning right before impact; the shell should hit the wall while attempting to hit you. Anyway, the battle maps were really cool and so was the hidden 150cc. I remember trying so hard to receive gold on 50cc and 100cc and was so happy when I did; especially after beating 100cc’s special cup. Boy was I shocked when I found, after the ending, the title screen now boasted 150cc. I spent days of non-stop playing in order to receive gold on everything for 150cc (Rainbow Road is really freakin’ hard!). Now we can race together and even play retro tracks from the SNES version together by connecting to the internet with Mario Kart Wii. Those that race with me will notice I choose SNES Mario Circuit 3 frequently. Anyway, have fun racing and I hope to see you out there on the tracks!
8/1/2011-Montezuma's Revenge-ColecoVision
I’m not sure how many of you remember this game but I know I sure do. Exploring labyrinths, solving puzzles, and timing jumps were all integral parts of this game. I know some of you are thinking that some of this sounds eerily similar to Super Mario Bros. and/or Zelda. Well, in a way you are right! Montezuma’s Revenge (and other Coleco games) serves as the foundation for many modern-day gaming concepts. In fact, for those of you who understand that Mario’s origins lay in early versions of Donkey Kong may recognize the similar gameplay between Donkey Kong and Montezuma’s Revenge. Sure, 4 bit games leave much to be desired in many present day societies, but no matter how developed gaming gets, jumping into that abyss of fire full of coins is an exciting and rewarding experience even today. Montezuma’s Revenge; a truly innovative game of its time.

7/25/11-Shadow of the Colossus-PS2
Shadow of the Colossus (SOTC) is not only great game to play, it’s also one of those games others will be entertained just watching it be played. The character movements are parallel to that of a string puppet as the main character gets tossed around and flung through the air as a rag-doll. It’s sometimes so realistic that I find myself trying to mentally hold on to Colossus hair with fear of being flung into the distance. With no monsters contained on the world map, exploration is left totally open with only giant bosses to fight. This final boss is the thing nightmares are made of and a jump to its chest is congruent with these nightmares. Horseback riding includes tricks and stances so you can do some cool things while flinging arrows at bosses from your horse. Yup, SOTC is a truly awesome game. If you have yet to play it, put it on your must-do list!
7/4/11-Super Mario Bros. 3
Not many would argue that Super Mario Bros. 3 is the best mario game of all time. Sure, Super Mario Wii, 64, World, etc. are all great games, but Super Mario 3 was the template for all of them. From the World maps to the introduction of world 9, this game is completely awesome! Let's not forget the numerous suits; Racoon Mario, Hammer Bros. suit, Frog suit, Tanoki suit, Goomba shoe, the list goes on. With so many options for gameplay, many gamers find themselves returning again and again. Not only does the music never get old, it has become timeless. Now you'll have to excuse me, I think I'm gonna go play some Super Mario Bros. 3!
6/29/11-Manhunt 2 (Wii)
The original Manhunt for PS2 was great, right? Manhunt 2 was even better. Well what about when applied to motion controls? The result is nothing short of a murder simulator. Whether you’re goin’ at someone with a skill-saw, wrappin’ someone skull with a pair of pliers, or just delivering a good old-fashioned shanking, Manhunt 2 with enhanced Wii motion controls is intense. I particularly enjoy wrapping the telephone cord around the hotel clerk’s neck myself. Just don’t forget to move some furniture and warn your family; you don’t need any involuntary manslaughter cases brought against you!
6/20/11-The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Let’s face it; Ocarina of Time was the Zelda game that changed the Zelda series forever. The first of its kind to render a 3D environment in which to explore Hyrule. The game starts as you (Link) are having a nightmare. A faerie comes to you and implores you for help. Soon Link discovers Hyrule is in desperate need of a hero, so he sets off to meet with Princess Zelda and discuss its redemption. Zelda sends young Link on a quest to recover the spiritual stones and thus open the door to the sacred realm. Unbenownced to Link and Zelda, Link is too young to wield the master sword and his soul is thereby locked inside the sacred realm for 7 years! Once returning to Hyrule, Link finds that much has changed and that Ganon has taken over. The quest now begins as Link travels to the 6 temples and back and forth through time in order to set things right. Not to mention the end battle of this game is truly epic. If you’re looking for an engrossing game with awesome rewards this Zelda game is for you!
6/13/11-Super Mario Galaxy 2
Whoever has played it knows what I’m talkin’ about. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is awesome. After the destruction and rebirth of the universe in the 1st installment, Mario sets off to rescue Princess Toadstool again. The sequence of events is very similar to the 1st one, but the challenge and world map have change dramatically. The world map works like it does in Mario Wii and the game is much harder than the 1st Mario Galaxy. I have gotten 242 stars on both games and trust me; the 2nd one is much harder! As if World 7 wasn’t hard enough; after collecting 120 stars, Rosalina sends you back into the cosmos to find and collect 120 green stars! Some of these stars are nearly impossible to locate; and once one is found, you have to go about the task of figuring out exactly how to get it. After collecting 240 stars, the game decides to throw one more challenge your way; the Grand Master Galaxy! Just getting through it once is hard enough, but you’ll have to do it all with 1 wedge of health for the final star. I will not reveal what is obtained after 242 stars, but it’s pretty worth it. Not to mention you get to call yourself the Master of Galaxies (Sabian twice over). Pick up and play this game, I guarantee you love it!
6/5/11-Secret of Mana
This epic adventure was first released in the United States in October of 1993. After learning the basics of the play controls while experiencing this game's introdution, I soon found it difficult to focus on anything but Secret of Mana. The story centers around a young boy who soon finds himself in the middle of a personal quest to become the Mana Knight. After being banished from your home villiage, you are soon joined by a young girl and sprite child with common interests. And so your quest begins; traveling to distant lands and seeking the 8 Mana seeds so as to restore order while returning peace. Along the way, each charector's personal story is elaborated on. You are searching for your origins, the young girl is seeking her lost love Dyluck, and the sprite child searches for its home in the forest (soon to be replaced with a search for place in a world that has no more need for sprites). The story is plush with richness, the music is phenominal for SNES capabilities, and the play control is unique and reactive. Additionally, this one of kind RPG features a 3 player multiplayer capability that allows three players to quest alongside one-another simultaniously! Let's not forget Mana's ending. Truly worth playing through the game for. What this game has to offer is what makes it my favorite game of all time; as a result, it is the first game covered under "Game of the Week".
